Duties and Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Fleet Supervisors, this position will be responsible for:- Carrying out all functions of a fully qualified Certified Mechanic I.
- Holding one certificate of qualification.
- Maintaining and completing records as required by a fleet management system.
- Carrying out related work including preventive maintenance, diagnostic investigations, service, mandatory and statutory maintenance and repair of a diverse and specialized fleet of vehicles/equipment.
- Will comply with current Provincial and Federal safety legislation.
- Will perform Occupational Health & Safety duties as outlined in the Corporation’s Health and Safety program
- Will maintain amiable relations with customers, the public and fellow staff.
- Will perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications:
- Must have an Ontario Secondary School Graduation Diploma, or Ontario Ministry of Education equivalency; plus be in the possession of a current Certificate of Qualification in Truck and Coach Technician OR a Certificate of Qualification in Automotive Service Technician from the Ministry of Education or appropriate governing body;
- Must have a total of five (5) years of experience, including two (2) years of experience over the above-noted Certificate of Qualification
- Must hold and maintain, as a condition of employment, a current, valid and lawful Class ‘D’ Driver’s Licence with a ‘Z’ endorsement OR must attain a current, valid and lawful Class ‘D’ Driver’s License with a ‘Z’ endorsement in accordance with the Highway Traffic Act, for the purpose of operating a City of Windsor vehicle within the probationary/confirmation period and must provide a driver’s abstract as a condition of employment;
- Must be able to read and understand written instructions from supervisor or coworker, service records on work orders, corporate communications, policies and procedures, technical service bulletins, emails, MSDS, etc.
- Must be able to read and understand instructions or operating procedures on all equipment and machinery such as hoists, power washers, diagnostic scanners, generators, etc.
- Must be able to read, follow and understand service/repair procedures in shop manuals, specifications, proper removal and installation of components, proper adjustment procedures.
- Must be able to read and understand complex electrical and hydraulic schematics, vacuum hose, routing diagrams and air brake system flow charts used in diagnostics and repair procedures.
- Must be able to read and understand blueprints of specific components or complete assemblies with detailed measurements, hidden lines, hole locations, depths and sizes, etc.
- Must be able to read and understand automotive service/repair manuals that are very technical in content and design.
- Must be able to read, understand and adhere to legislated safety standards.
- Must remain current and up to date with any Ministry standards and provincial laws that are changed and/or modified.
- Must be able to inspect and perform preventative maintenance to a wide variety of vehicles and specialty equipment of a municipal fleet.
- Must be able to diagnose and repair all components of vehicles and equipment including shop equipment, including service, repair, operation and utilization of proper tools and equipment in a safe manner.
- Must be able to work all shifts (days, afternoons, midnights) as scheduled.
- Will operate diagnostic scan tools to determine faults requiring repair.
- Will utilize computer systems to record labour hours and servicing comments, time off requests and keep proper daily records of maintenance requirements.
- Will operate service truck for service calls in all types of weather conditions. Operate all vehicles to diagnose, road test and transfer between locations.
- Will maintain cleanliness of tools, equipment, shop and work area.
- Will maintain hours of service, daily vehicle inspection reports and other requirements of the Highway Traffic Act as it relates to the City’s commercial vehicle operator registration (CVOR).
- Given that this job is a new position a Physical Demands analysis will be completed with the incumbent after approximately six months of occupying the position.
